Fruits Basket

How can I describe such a wonderful anime as Fruits Basket? ::sigh:: All I can say is that it really gets to you. It's one of the best stories I've ever seen and it is very touching.

Fruits Basket is about a girl named Honda Tohru (whose father died when she was small and whose mother recently passed away because of a car accident). She lived in a Tent when she was first introduced to us and as she was walking to school, she stopped by chance at a house she had never seen before since she took up residence in the woods. The house had some Juunichi snacks that was left oustide the door. Curious as she was, she went to take a closer look... And because of that curiousity she began a new life that involved the Sohma family. A family that possesed the curse of the "Juunichi".

The Juunichi are the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Each person of the Sohma family that is cursed with the spirit of the Juunichi transforms to the animal that they were born under when they are hugged by the opposite sex or if they are weak or nervous. Tohru eventually finds out about the family's unusual circumstances when she bumped into Kyou who turned into a cat... The cat isn't a Juunichi you see, and because of that... Kyou is the unwelcomed member in the Sohma family. Mainly because of Akito. The head of the Sohma clan.

It's hard to explain the story of Fruits Basket in such a page as this. All I can say is that, each member of this cursed family all have a story to tell and each one of them are memorable. You can't help but like all of them. And though the story is heart breaking at times, it's also really funny and sweet.

The first person Tohru meets is Shigure. The novelist who loves to tease and is always usually so happy. Then there's Yuki, who's the most popular guy in school. So popular in fact that there's even a "Prince Yuki" fanclub, that would do a dance to declare their love for him. Hatsuharu... the absentminded one who has no sense of direction and has one awesome mean streak. Ayame, the weirdo and Yuki's brother. Hatori, the only real "normal" one. Kagura, who is very much in love with Kyou and who loves him so much that she hurts him... When this happens it's hilarious. Poor Kyou. There's Momiji who's always so happy and prefers to wear the girls uniform because it looks cuter on him. Ritsu who always apologizes, Rin who was Haru's ex-girlfriend but is supposedly in love with Shigure, Kureno, who is attracted to Arisa of all people (Rin and Kureno though are only in the manga). And then Kisa and Hiro. The youngest of all these cursed Juunichi.

Each one of them have a story to tell. And each one of them becomes more heartbreaking than the other. I am one of those people that hardly ever cry at anything... but watching Hatori's and Momiji's story just broke my heart. And then there was Kyou's story.... I've never heard of a story so sad in my life. I couldn't help but like his character even more after that. Everytime I watch those last ending episodes of Fruits Basket that focused on Kyou's life... I still get teary eyed. It's just so sad but inspiring too... (achh... Aurora turns into a girly girl).

Although, I do like the anime very much... the manga, as always is even better. Especially during the Chapters of Kyou and his confrontation with Tohru. For one, in the anime... when this happened, Yuki and Tohru's friends were there to help her make up her mind about what she really felt about Kyou and the rest of the Sohma family. But in the manga... Tohru did not need help from Yuki or her friends. She went straight to Kyou without turning back and without help from anyone. The manga is a lot more sentimental and funnier too. If you read it, you won't be disappointed. After all, Fruits Basket was the number one shoujo manga in 2001.

I don't really know what else to say. I just wish you can all check it out. I know, I couldn't really express this wonderful story here very well, but it trully is one of the best.

The Love Triangle?
Will it be Kyou or Yuki? Which one of these hot bishounen will Tohru eventually end up with? My guess... and I'm pretty sure about it is, that it will be Yuki. After all, the girl always ends up with the 2nd main character doesn't she? Instead of the third one which would be Kyou. And I mean, a character like Yuki always end up with the main girl anyway... It's always like that in EVERY anime. But for Kyou... I think he should end up with Kagura. And yes, for people who are familiar with Fruits Basket, you would totally look at me like I'm crazy... but I think it will end up that way... Damn manga for keeping me on my toes...

Although Kagura has that bad temper and Kyou would always yell at her and is irritated by her... I think that someday it will be different. Maybe vol. #10, Takaya-san?.. From the very beginning wasn't it Kagura that understood Kyou? That accepted him even when witnessing the true form of the cat's spirit? She trusted him and became close to him. She even told Tohru that she loves everything about him and you can tell that she's totally devoted. It's just that damned temper of hers. I think she can understand Kyou so much better that Tohru ever will and I think she will eventually let that other side of her die down whenever she is with Kyou.. and Kyou will see that Kagura was what he was missing all along.... (at least that's what I want to happen).

They look quite cute together too. That scene in the anime when little Kyou and Kagura were holding hands... and how he called her "Kagura nee-chan" back than... That was just so adorable. Awww... And to the present time when Kagura made him hold her hand which he refused but he gave in to her request anyway because she started to cry... That scene was great. And kinda romantic too. Forget Tohru. Kagura is the coolest. Crazy and a lunatic sometimes but you just gotta love her and that Neko backpack of hers which she made because she loves that other Neko so much. ^_^
